Gems from Zambia
by Brendan Laurs
Gems & Gemology editor Brendan Laurs will brief us on his September 2004 expedition to gem and
mineral deposits in Zambia, where he gathered first-hand information on the location, geology, and
gem production of the Kafubu emerald region (the world’s second most important source of
emeralds by value, after Colombia) and gem pegmatites that are mined for tourmaline
(including bright yellow “Canary” material), morganite, and aquamarine.
